Hojicha Tea

Single Estate Green Tea

A distinctive Japanese green tea, celebrated for its roasted, toasty aroma and smooth, mellow taste. Crafted by gently roasting steamed green tea leaves, it develops warm notes of caramel, nuts, and wood, with minimal bitterness. Naturally low in caffeine, Hojicha is light and easy to enjoy at any time of day, making it a popular choice for both adults and children in Japan. Its comforting flavour and timeless character have made it a beloved staple for generations.

Hojicha can be savoured hot for a rich, earthy brew or enjoyed chilled for a refreshing, nutty iced tea. Best experienced on its own, but it also pairs beautifully with savoury dishes, grilled foods, or lightly sweet desserts.

Ingredients

100% Organic Green Tea.

Flavour Notes:

Aroma: Warm and toasty, with notes of roasted nuts, wood, and a gentle smokiness.
Flavour:
Smooth and mellow, with caramelised sweetness, soft umami, and a subtle cocoa undertone.
Finish:
Rounded and comforting, with lingering roasted depth and a clean, dry aftertaste.
Pairing:
Pairs beautifully with grilled foods, savoury rice dishes, or lightly sweet desserts. Equally enjoyable hot or iced for daily sipping.

Origin Story:

Hojicha was first created in Kyoto in the 1920s, when tea merchants began roasting leftover green tea leaves, stems, and stalks over charcoal to preserve freshness and reduce waste. The gentle roasting transformed the tea’s character, softening bitterness and releasing its signature smoky, caramel-like aroma. What began as a clever innovation quickly became a beloved staple across Japan, valued for its smoothness, low caffeine content, and comforting warmth. Today, Hojicha remains a symbol of Japanese ingenuity — a tea that balances tradition with everyday ease, offering a roasted depth unlike any other green tea.
