Japanese Green Gyokuro tea leaves on a white surface

Gyokuro Tea

Single Estate Green Tea

Japan’s most prized green tea, renowned for its deep umami richness and luminous jade liquor. Shade-grown for several weeks before harvest, the leaves develop a distinctive sweetness and smooth, mellow flavour, resulting in a tea with exceptional depth, soft vegetal notes, and a silky texture. This slow cultivation process creates a uniquely complex cup that embodies refinement and artistry, making Gyokuro the pinnacle of Japanese green tea.

Gyokuro is best enjoyed hot in small, mindful sips to savour its layered flavours, or cold-brewed for an elegantly sweet, refreshing experience. It pairs beautifully with light, delicate foods such as sushi, sashimi, or simple rice dishes.

Ingredients

100% Organic Green Tea.

Flavour Notes:

Aroma: Deeply vegetal, with seaweed, nori, and subtle floral undertones.
Flavour:
Rich umami with layered sweetness, buttery smoothness, and hints of fresh spinach.
Finish:
Long and elegant, with lingering savoury depth and a gentle sweetness.
Pairing:
Best on its own, but pairs gracefully with sushi, sashimi, rice, or lightly seasoned seafood.

Origin Story:

Gyokuro, meaning “jade dew,” was first developed in the 1830s in Uji, Kyoto — the historic heart of Japanese tea cultivation. Farmers discovered that shading the tea bushes before harvest slowed photosynthesis, boosting chlorophyll and amino acids such as L-theanine. The result was a tea with unrivalled sweetness, savoury depth, and an emerald-green liquor that set it apart from all others. For nearly two centuries, Gyokuro has been considered the pinnacle of Japanese green tea, prized by connoisseurs and reserved for special occasions. Its cultivation and careful brewing remain a testament to Japanese craftsmanship and dedication to perfection.
